Drill and Needle-Free Dentistry

Now Available for Naperville Patients

(Naperville, IL), July 30, 1999 - Don't care for the shrill sound of the high speed dental drill and sight of needles for anesthesia? Both are now a thing of the past at the Naperville office of Dr. Joseph A. Haselhorst, the first local dentist to offer Hydrokinetic™ laser technology.

The new technology, the Millennium Hydrokinetic YSGG™ laser system, allows Dr. Haselhorst to perform all classes of cavity preparations without using needles, anesthesia or the high-speed drill in most cases. Dr. Haselhorst was featured last month in a CBS-TV Channel 2 10'oclock news report on the new technology. Only three other dental practices in Chicagoland offer the new technology.

According to Dr. Haselhorst, the new technology offers many patient benefits. "Cuts can be quickly made to all parts of the tooth including enamel, dentin and caries. Also, numerous soft tissue procedures can be completed with little or no bleeding. What's more, many common problems of the high-speed drill are eliminated. For example, when a high-speed comes in contact with a tooth, it causes small cracks, which weaken the tooth structure and eventually allows decay to set in."

Dr. Haselhorst, who is a clinical instructor at Northwestern University's School of Dentistry, said the laser is approved for use with both children and adults. "We offer patients the option of laser treatment. As with any new technology, some patients are going to be among the first to want it while others won't adopt it for awhile. Those that have opted for laser treatment seem to be impressed with its benefits, which includes being relieved from the stress that often accompanies dental care," he said.

In October 1998, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared the Millennium Hydrokinetic Er, CrYSGG™ laser for cutting hard dental tissue including enamel, dentin and caries. Hydrokinetic™ energy is produced by firing laser energy into a spray of atomized water. The water is energized and then is capable of cutting a wide range of human tissue including enamel (the hardest substance in the body), bone, cartilage and soft tissue.
Hydrokinetic™ cutting does not transmit heat to the target tissue whereas other modalities of cutting, such as a high-speed dental drill, laser power and electro-cautery, create painful heat when cutting tissue. Hydrokinetic™ energy can perform numerous dental procedures with little or no pain, virtually eliminating the need for anesthesia in most cases.

Dr. Haselhorst's practice is located at 507 South Main Street in Naperville.
